Android phone sound quality evaluation--Galaxy S2 i9100

The core components of the Samsung Galaxy S2 i9100 are almost all from Samsung. Its processor has always had a relationship with the processor in Apple's iOS device, but it is customary to look at the performance of the i9100 audio system today.

The Samsung Galaxy S2 i9100 uses the Samsung S5PV310 Exynos 4210 1.2GHz dual-core Cortex-A9 processor. In the audio system part, the i9100 uses a Yamaha Codec. The chip is small in size and has no complete model logo on the surface. However, the data can be found to be Yamaha YMU823. We have not found any information about this chip. And its predecessor, the Galaxy S i9000 uses the Wolfson WM8994 Codec, this chip is also used in the mobile phone Tianyu W700 we tested recently, and has a good performance.

Objective test:

E-MU 1616M PCIe Digital Audio System

In accordance with the usual practice, we conducted a set of objective tests on the headphone output of the Samsung i9100 mobile phone. The test is still in the form of a professional-grade sound card input, combined with common analysis methods to provide intuitive measurement results. The actual playback level of the i9100 is low, at -8.3dB. We compensated it to the standard level of 0 dB during the test by the recording device. In the test, since the i9100 default player does not support WAV format file management, although it can be browsed and played by other Android file manager, it cannot realize the loop playback function. We tested with the Winamp player and the Winamp playback quality was no different from the built-in player.

From the i9100's output level of -8.3dB, this is the higher output level in the phone, but we found significant test errors in the RMAA signal-to-noise ratio and dynamic range test items. Because for a 16-bit precision signal, its theoretical maximum signal-to-noise ratio is -96dB. This is because in the test, we improved the error in the RMAA test caused by the signal compensation by increasing the input level of the recording device, but it also shows that the two indicators of the i9100 are good. In terms of distortion, the total harmonic distortion performs better, but the intermodulation distortion is still relatively large, but it is at a general level in mobile phones.

From the spectral analysis results of the frequency sweep, it is consistent with the RMAA test, which mainly shows the dark harmonic distortion in the whole test signal range, but the noise floor noise is very small, from the mono separation test. It can be more clearly seen that its background color is close to black in the spectrum, but the harmonics are somewhat more dominant. In the 48KHz frequency scan, Android's problem remains.

Subjective listening:

Samsung i9100 built a pair of in-ear headphones, its size is slightly larger, wearing comfort is slightly affected, but from the sound performance can achieve the level of low-cost entry earplugs, its sound is not exaggerated, low-frequency sense relative to the ear The earphones are not prominent. The whole earphones are more focused on the intermediate frequency, the high frequency is slightly darker, the whole sound is introverted and soft, and the resolution is not enough. Compared with the H260 grade headphones, there is a certain gap.

During the test, we still used the popular Edifier H260, the innovative Aurvana Air and the Vsonic GR07 headphones. The contrasting mobile phone models are iPhone 4 and Tianyu W700. The output level of the i9100 is relatively high at -8.3dB. In the player, its volume can be set in 15 steps. However, during the audition, we found that it is above 13 files [excluding 13], the sound suddenly deteriorates and obvious burrs appear. In the case of dry sound, we speculate that more distortion may occur in 13 or more files. We did not notice this in the objective test, and we will supplement it in the experience report article.

Compared with the iPhone 4, the sound of the i9100 is a little bit awkward. The i9100's mid-range performance is close to that of the iPhone 4, but there is still a gap in quality, but the overall performance of the IF is significantly more full than the W700. The mid-range of the i9100 is still not solid enough, some are imaginary, and there is a noticeable burr at the high volume, while the iPhone 4 is more solid and dynamic. In terms of high frequency, the sound of iPhone 4 and i9100 is relatively clean. The high frequency of i9100 is slightly harder and slightly brighter, but there will be burrs at high volume, and the resolution is slightly worse than iPhone 4. The high-frequency resolution of the W700 is also good, but the sound density is slightly worse than the i9100, but the sound is much cleaner at large dynamics and louder, and the sound is not as rough as the i9100. In terms of low frequency, the i9100 appears to be slightly harder. It is obviously not good enough for a slightly fast and large dynamic low frequency, while the sound of the W700 is thin. The sound of the iPhone 4 is the most stable, the resolution is better, and the sound is fuller.

Overall, the sound of the i9100 is clean and transparent at medium and small volume, and the sound is relatively full, especially in the intermediate frequency. The vocal performance is obviously better than the Tianyu W700. However, its sound style is somewhat cold and hard. For music with a fast rhythm and a little dynamic dynamics or a slightly louder volume, the burr of the sound is obvious, especially the high frequency performance is not detailed enough, obviously it is blunt. In the Android phone, the sound performance of the i9100 is not excellent, but it is a relatively good category.
