Abstract: The AD73360 is a versatile, programmable three-phase power testing integrated circuit designed for industrial meters and multiple-input systems. This paper explores the design and application methods of a multi-channel data acquisition system built around the combination of ADSP-BF531 and AD73360 in the context of power load control terminals. Keywords: data acquisition; power load; AD73360; ADSP-BF531 Introduction: The power load control terminal serves as a critical monitoring device placed at the user end. Its primary responsibilities include collecting data, managing user controls, and facilitating communication within the power load management system. As the backbone of such systems, it must not only receive remote commands from the load management center but also execute local power and energy control based on predetermined consumption quotas. Additionally, it relays users’ energy usage data back to the central hub. In power load control terminals, the precision of data acquisition plays a decisive role in the overall performance of the system. For periodic electrical parameter measurements, simultaneous sampling is essential for accurately capturing real-time signals. Besides measuring voltage and current levels across each phase, the system must also detect the phase relationships between them, necessitating the simultaneous acquisition of multiple signals. During the development of these terminals, the digital signal processor ADSP-BF531 was chosen as the core of the system due to its computational capabilities. Simultaneously, the 16-bit A/D converter AD73360 was selected as the primary component of the front-end acquisition channel. Practical experience has shown that the AD73360 is well-suited for acquiring analog signals in power parameter measurements, providing excellent accuracy and stability. Chapter 1: Overview of AD73360 The AD73360 is a programmable, general-purpose 6-channel, 16-bit precision serial analog input front-end processor manufactured by Analog Devices (ADI). It functions as a three-phase power test IC for industrial meters or multiple-input systems. Each channel includes a signal conditioner, a programmable gain amplifier (PGA), an analog sigma-delta modulator, a sampler, and a serial interface. Given its built-in PGA and separate analog front end, it can handle small-scale sensor signals directly. Although sigma-delta ADCs typically do not require high-precision analog circuits, converting standard signals into differential signals is usually necessary before acquisition. The AD73360 features a signal conditioning module at the front end, enabling users to input signals as either single-ended or differential. This design significantly reduces the number and complexity of peripheral circuits. The AD73360 excels in industrial control applications requiring simultaneous sampling. It performs well in both large-signal and small-signal scenarios. With six analog input channels capable of simultaneous sampling, the system eliminates CPU intervention during the process. Consequently, phase errors caused by differences in sampling times are minimized. Sampling rates for each channel can be easily configured using a control word, offering options of 8 kHz, 16 kHz, 32 kHz, and 64 kHz. This makes it particularly suitable for three-phase power operation parameter measurement and control systems, such as simultaneous voltage and current sampling across all three phases. Moreover, compared to parallel interfaces, the AD73360 employs a six-wire industry-standard synchronous serial interface to connect with the CPU. This simplifies hardware connections, reducing both the size of the printed circuit board and electromagnetic interference. Such improvements enhance system reliability and stability.
