Yang Xueshan, former deputy minister of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology: Chinese sensor people still need to be serious

In a speech delivered at the 2017 Global Sensors and Internet of Things Industry Summit held in Jiading, Shanghai, Yang Xueshan, former Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, emphasized that Chinese sensor professionals must not miss this golden opportunity. He urged them to take the development of the industry seriously, not only to advance the ecological and industrial chains but also to ensure high-quality execution. "We need to face our own problems head-on," he said, highlighting the importance of focusing on core technologies and long-term accumulation. The summit, hosted by the China Sensors and Internet of Things Industry Alliance and the Shanghai Microtechnical Research Institute, brought together numerous government officials, industry leaders, and experts. Attendees included Wang Wei, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences; Ding Wenwu, Honorary Chairman of the China Sensor and Internet of Things Alliance; Wu Shengwu, Deputy Director of the Electronic Information Department of MIIT; Ma Chunlei, Director of the Shanghai Science and Technology Commission; and many other influential figures from both public and private sectors. The event took place against the backdrop of a rapidly growing global IoT market, which is expected to reach $1.7 trillion by 2020, according to IDC. The IoT industry is expanding into areas such as smart cities, intelligent transportation, big data, and AI, with sensors serving as the foundational layer for all these developments. With demand surging, the global sensor market is projected to grow from tens of billions to trillions of dollars, ushering in a new era of smart hardware systems. Yang Xueshan outlined three key points in his address. First, he stressed the need to build core competencies in industrial data integration and high-quality technology. Second, he advocated for a shift from mere sensing to perception, emphasizing the importance of data processing and feedback mechanisms. Third, he called for closer collaboration between equipment manufacturers and the market during R&D and production, ensuring that sensor development aligns with real-world needs. Wu Shengwu, Deputy Director of the Electronics Department at MIIT, highlighted the significance of cross-border integration and innovation in the current technological landscape. He outlined six key tasks for future development, including top-level design, building innovation centers, strengthening basic projects, promoting patent research, supporting industrial alliances, and prioritizing application-driven growth. Ma Chunlei, Secretary of the Jiading District Committee, spoke about the district's role as a science and technology hub, mentioning its focus on integrated circuits, new energy vehicles, medical equipment, and intelligent manufacturing. Meanwhile, Ding Wenwu, President of the National Integrated Circuit Industry Investment Fund, announced plans to support IoT and sensor development through a dedicated fund, including the construction of an 8-inch “Beyond Moore” pilot line by the Shanghai Micro-Technical Research Institute. Xu Zhiyuan, Deputy Director of the China Institute of Information Technology and Industrial Integration, presented an industry map of smart sensors, noting that China’s smart sensor sector is growing rapidly and will concentrate mainly in the Yangtze River Delta, Bohai Sea, Pearl River Delta, and Central China regions. Huawei’s Vice President Chu Qing emphasized the importance of NB-IoT technology in accelerating IoT adoption, while Honeywell’s Chai Xiaozhou outlined the future directions of sensors—miniaturization, integration, and wireless connectivity. Finally, Jonathan, Vice President of the American Automobile Manufacturing Alliance, discussed the trends in autonomous driving, sharing, electrification, and connected cars, highlighting the challenges and opportunities ahead.
