During the early hours of Beijing Time, HTC Vive unveiled its latest innovation at a product launch event: the Vive Pro. This new version not only boosts resolution significantly but also integrates compatibility with the SteamVR 2.0 tracking system. In addition, HTC introduced the Vive Wireless Adaptor, which utilizes Intel WiGig technology to provide a more seamless and immersive VR experience.
As anticipated before the press conference, the enhanced resolution was the main highlight. According to HTC’s research, 89% of users care about display quality, so the Vive Pro features dual 3.5-inch AMOLED displays, delivering a combined resolution of 2880x1600—78% higher than the original Vive model. This improvement promises sharper visuals and a more realistic virtual environment.
The Vive Pro also supports the SteamVR 2.0 tracking system, which is backward compatible with previous Vive models. The tracking range has been expanded from 4.5x4.5 meters to an impressive 10x10 meters, offering greater freedom of movement for users.
Another notable upgrade is the redesigned headband, which now includes high-performance headphones, a built-in amplifier, dual microphones with active noise cancellation, and two front-facing cameras. The ergonomic design ensures better weight distribution, making long sessions more comfortable.
HTC also announced that the Vive Pro (without controllers or base stations) will be released later this year, followed by the SteamVR 2.0-compatible controllers and base stations. Additionally, the Vive Wireless Upgrade Kit, which uses Intel WiGig technology to operate on the 60GHz band, will be available globally in Q3. This wireless solution offers lower latency and improved performance, enhancing the overall VR experience.
In terms of content, Viveport has received a major update. Based on a VR-First approach, Viveport now offers a "VR Preview" feature, allowing users to fully immerse themselves in content before purchasing. This interactive preview gives a more accurate sense of what the VR experience entails. Earlier this year, Viveport launched the world's first VR content membership service, and it now offers over 1,000 VR titles worldwide, with more than 300 content options available through the membership.
A new version of Vive Video was also introduced. This updated VR video player supports 180° and 360° videos, and the redesigned app makes it easier for users to search for and access VR content. Vive Video will be pre-installed on the upcoming Vive Focus all-in-one headset.
At the event, the Vive booth showcased a variety of VR content optimized for the Vive Pro, including a multiplayer demo based on the upcoming Hollywood film "Number One Player." This demonstration highlighted the potential of the Vive Pro for both entertainment and enterprise applications.
