In addition to extending battery life, the ISL98611 improves display brightness uniformity and color consistency. The highly integrated ISL98611 includes not only boost regulators, LDOs, and inverting charge pumps for both +5V and -5V outputs, but also a boost regulator with 3-channel sink current sharing control for LED backlight driver. This single-chip solution has four main benefits for design engineers:
· Longer battery life: When using a smartphone to browse the web and send and receive email, most of the battery power is consumed by its backlight LED and display power. The ISL98611 backlight LED driver is 7% more efficient (up to 93%) than a multi-chip solution. The +/-5V display power supply uses a 2.5x2mm2 inductor to produce greater than 88% efficiency at 15mA load current, while the closest Competitor products can only achieve 85% efficiency.
· Improved display brightness uniformity: The ISL98611 provides excellent current matching at very low LED currents: +/- 2.2% matching accuracy down to 1mA, +/- at 50μA 2.8% matching accuracy.
· Improve display color consistency: ISL98611 includes hybrid dimming function, and small current uses PWM dimming to eliminate white LED color shift under low LED current conditions (this problem occurs when DC dimming).
· Minimum PCB area: The overall display power + backlight solution of the ISL98611 occupies 24% less PCB area than competing products, and requires only 8 peripheral components. This provides more room for the phone battery.
