According to Jiang Xu, technologies such as unmanned stores, voice assistants, and AR shopping have become part of daily life in China. These innovations are not only advanced but also widely adopted, something he believes the U.S. could learn from. “The American market is strong in terms of technology and theory, but when it comes to applying new technologies in traditional industries, they lag behind,†he explained. “This is because Chinese consumers are more open to trying new things, and national policies support innovation.â€
For example, he pointed out that e-commerce logistics in the U.S. is less efficient compared to China due to reliance on third-party providers rather than in-house teams. In contrast, companies like Suning have built robust infrastructures that enable faster and more reliable delivery services.
At CES 2018, Suning showcased its unmanned store concept, where customers can enter and exit using facial recognition and mobile payments. The booth itself felt like a real shop, with products displayed in different sections. Users could experience features like “face recognition checkout,†“big data recommendations,†and “smart shopping.†Jiang Xu emphasized that these technologies are not just for show—they are designed to enhance customer experience through personalized service.
He also highlighted the role of big data in shaping smart retail. “Imagine walking into a store, and the system instantly recognizes you and recommends products based on your preferences. That’s the future of retail—understanding your needs better than you do yourself.â€
In addition to the unmanned store, Suning introduced AR Easy Promo, allowing customers to visualize virtual products in real spaces. Other innovations like Su Xiaoyu, Yan value, and PPTV laser TVs were also featured, showcasing the brand’s commitment to pushing technological boundaries.
