Lenovo Acquires 51% of Fujitsu's Shares for US$269 Million

[Global network technology comprehensive report] According to Reuters, November 2, Lenovo and Fujitsu reached an agreement to purchase 51% of the Fujitsu personal computer business for US$269 million. Earlier, Lenovo just announced that its quarterly profit has declined because of the global computer market downturn. After the announcement, Lenovo’s share price rose by about 5%. Lenovo and Fujitsu first announced in October 2016 that they would cooperate in the computer business. In this transaction, Lenovo announced that it will acquire the shares of Fujitsu Customer Computing Co., Ltd. for 17.85 billion yen (156.7 million US dollars), and increase the additional amount of 25.5-12.75 billion yen according to the company's operation in 2020. Earlier in the day, Lenovo announced a profit of US$139 million in the second quarter of this year, compared with US$157 million in the second quarter of last year. Lenovo’s $118 million tax bonus helped Lenovo’s revenue exceed analyst estimates of 44 million. Lenovo's revenue was $ 11.8 billion, last year's corresponding data is $ 11.2 billion, analysts unanimously estimated $ 11.3 billion. According to Lenovo, its global shipments of computers have risen by 17% compared to the previous quarter. In contrast, its global market share has fallen by 0.2% to 21% in the past six months. However, Lenovo did not disclose the specific shipments. Because of consumers' preference for mobile devices, the computer markets around the world have been sluggish. According to data from Gartner, the global market for personal computers in the third quarter of 2017 decreased by 3.6% compared to a year ago, which is the 12th consecutive decline. Earlier this year, Lenovo took the throne of its world's largest computer maker to HP. Lenovo’s handset business group tried to improve its performance in the second half of the year, but Lenovo’s mobile phone business reported a decrease in operating losses before paying a tax of US$261 million a year. The loss of its data center business increased to US$214 million. Lenovo expects that the downturn in the market will still pose great challenges in the short term, but it also indicates that the cooperation with Fujitsu will increase its business globally.
