Technical Analysis: New Zero-Power AC/DC Converters for Switching Power Supplies

The VIPer0P is an off-line AC to DC converter with an 800V avalanche-resistant power MOSFET and a PWM controller for 7W output power over a wide input power range. The embedded zero-power mode (ZPM) allows the switching power supply to consume less than 4mW at 230VAC. This power consumption can be seen as zero power consumption as defined by the IEC 62301 standard.

The high level of internal functionality of VIPer0P helps designers design a lightweight power supply while saving component costs.

The VIPer0P is a flexible design power converter for switching power supply topologies such as flyback converters, positive or negative output buck converters.

The product's wide output voltage range (5V-30V) allows designers to choose the transformer flexibly. Among the many internal protection functions, the new magnetic flux density leakage protection prevents current spikes and transformer saturation during startup.

Foreword

At present, green energy conservation is a huge challenge for home appliance manufacturers. In order to meet the requirements of more stringent energy efficiency regulations that are currently or later introduced, home appliance manufacturers must design products in accordance with the concept of energy conservation and environmental protection.

Smart power products are the pillar of STMicroelectronics' business. STMicroelectronics is committed to providing energy-efficient power to customers' smart home appliances, and VIPer0P is an example of ST's commitment.

Many home appliances are in standby mode during most of their life cycle, and a lot of power is wasted. The reason for this phenomenon is very simple, but no one wants to turn off the mechanical power switch and cut off the electrical connection between the appliance and the power socket.

Intelligent power switch management can effectively solve this energy waste problem, and VIPer0P's Zero Power Mode (ZPM) is designed for this purpose. Advanced switch-on management technology enables extremely low input power consumption even when the appliance is in standby mode without disconnecting from the power outlet.

In fact, the device can be automatically shut down immediately after the end of the work cycle, and restarted if necessary. The zero power mode is controlled automatically by the microcontroller or by the user with a low voltage switch button or remote control system. With zero power mode, electrical products can eliminate mechanical switches and reduce component costs.

VIPer0P product features

Figure 2 shows a schematic diagram of the VIPer0P. The package consists of a 800V breakdown voltage, 20Ω on-resistance MOSFET transistor and a fixed-frequency current-mode PWM controller with overcurrent protection. In order to be able to achieve the electromagnetic interference specification with a minimum filter, the controller operating frequency uses a fixed frequency of the frequency jitter technique. In terms of energy efficiency and transformer size, STMicroelectronics offers two products for the customer to choose the most effective solution, namely the "FO" switching frequency of 60kHz "L" and the 120kHz "H". The VIPer0P is equipped with a light load management function that also achieves good energy efficiency at loads of a few milliamps.

To avoid hearing noise from the human ear, the leakage limit flow (IDLIM) is reduced from 400 mA to 105 mA at light loads, at which point the controller enters pulse frequency modulation (PFM) mode.

The package is available in SO16 Narrow Mount (SMD).
