New communication method: magnetometer

We use 3G\4G\Wi-Fi and Bluetooth for communication with smart phones. In fact, there is also a little-known communication method.

In the compass app on iPhone and Android phones, there is a pulse or magnetic field sensor or magnetometer that receives magnetic field information from nearby electromagnets.

However, the transfer rate is quite slow (only 40B per second) and is only useful within 2 cm. But Vassilis Kostakos of the University of Oulu in Finland says it has its own advantages. He and his colleagues built an electromagnetic system to connect with the Android phone and confirmed his ideas.

By writing data in a changing magnetic field, they found that they could pass any information on the website to the phone via an electromagnet. This means that placing a small electromagnet in a poster posted on the street is equivalent to placing a QR code, and the benefit is that the advertiser can change the Uniform Resource Locator (URL) at will. Vassilis said: "This is a live broadcast of dynamic information that is constantly being broadcast, and the QR code can only display pre-set static information."

When the cafe is in line

This new delivery method can also improve the information security of micropayments. Near Field Communication (NFC) radio signals allow you to pay for items you want to buy within 20 cm, but at the same time mean that only 20 cm of the peeper can steal your money from the phone, such as in coffee. Vassilis said that the magnetic information system can only exchange information within 2 cm of the payment terminal. After the condition is met, the magnet will send a security code to activate the NFC application.

These are just some of the applications that the Oulu team found early on, and they will also reveal more magnetic communication plans at the Universal Computing Conference in Seattle, Washington in September.

New communication methods are coming soon

Vassilis said that perhaps other systems of smartphones can also transmit information in this way.

“Compared to other sensors, the efficiency of this method depends on the speed at which you operate the test parameters,” Vassilis said. “I don’t know how to make the barometer work better for long distances. We need to change the air pressure quickly to convey the message. This is tricky."

Andrew Campbell, head of the smart phone sensing group at Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire, believes the Oulu team's findings are promising. “It’s cool to use a smartphone’s magnetometer to communicate,” he said. The lack of bandwidth to fit all wireless devices has kept researchers trying all possible paths, and Vassilis's idea is really likely to solve this problem. Campbell said: "Perhaps there are still defects in widespread application, but their experiment is a new breakthrough, which is very exciting."
