Vassilis said that perhaps other systems of smartphones can also transmit information in this way.
“Compared to other sensors, the efficiency of this method depends on the speed at which you operate the test parameters,†Vassilis said. “I don’t know how to make the barometer work better for long distances. We need to change the air pressure quickly to convey the message. This is tricky."
Andrew Campbell, head of the smart phone sensing group at Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire, believes the Oulu team's findings are promising. “It’s cool to use a smartphone’s magnetometer to communicate,†he said.
