ST expands high-performance STM32 microcontroller product line

**ST Expands High-Performance STM32 Microcontroller Product Line** China, January 5, 2015 – STMicroelectronics (NYSE: STM) has introduced the latest addition to its STM32F446 family of microcontrollers, offering designers more flexibility and enhanced performance for a wide range of applications. This new product integrates advanced ARM Cortex-M4 processing capabilities, with up to 256KB or 512KB of on-chip flash memory and 128KB of RAM. It also features an energy-efficient storage expansion interface and multiple communication interfaces, making it ideal for industrial, medical, and IoT applications. The STM32F446 leverages STMicroelectronics’ Adaptive Accelerator® (ART Accelerator®) technology, allowing program code to run from flash without wait states. Combined with intelligent system architecture and advanced 90nm flash technology, this ensures exceptional performance. The built-in floating point unit and DSP instructions further boost processing power, delivering 225 DMIPS and a CoreMark score of 608 at 180MHz—setting a new benchmark for efficiency and speed. In addition to powerful processing, the STM32F446 includes advanced peripherals such as a camera interface, seven I2S audio interfaces, a Consumer Electronics Control (CEC) module for managing HDMI devices, a SPDIF digital audio interface, and a parallel display interface. A USB module with integrated power rail supports a minimum core supply voltage of 1.7V, enhancing design flexibility. To support external memory integration, the STM32F446 comes with a Flexible Memory Controller (FMC) and two quad SPI (QSPI) interfaces. The FMC can control SRAM, SDRAM, NOR/NAND, or LCDs, while the dual QSPI allows independent operation for high-speed data transfer. These features help improve system performance and scalability. For developers focused on low power consumption, the STM32F446 offers a range of power-saving features, including dynamic voltage scaling, clock gating, and flexible sleep modes. In STOP mode, the operating current is reduced to just 50μA, while retaining all data in SRAM. The STM32F446 benefits from ST’s extensive STM32 ecosystem, including over 600 pin- and software-compatible ARM Cortex-M-based microcontroller families. It works seamlessly with development tools like STM32Cube, STM32 Nucleo, and STM32 Discovery boards, supporting major IDEs such as IAR, Keil, and GCC. Additionally, mbed by ARM provides free tools and open-source modules to accelerate development. Samples of the STM32F446 are now available for major customers, with volume production expected in Q1 2015. The device is offered in two package options: WLCSP81 (3.728mm x 3.85mm) and LQFP144 (20mm x 20mm), with both 256KB and 512KB flash versions available, each paired with 128KB SRAM.
