Polestar, the high-performance division of Volvo Cars, has officially become an independent brand. This marks a major step in its journey toward high-performance electrified vehicles. On October 17, Polestar will unveil its first product in China, introducing new models and sharing details about its future products, industrialization plans, and business strategies. The brand will no longer use the Volvo logo but will instead feature its own exclusive emblem.
The collaboration between Volvo and Polestar dates back to 1996, with Volvo acquiring full ownership of Polestar in 2015. As part of the Volvo Group, Polestar was initially a performance division, but now it operates independently while still benefiting from Volvo's R&D and engineering expertise. This strategic move positions Polestar as a strong contender in the global premium electric vehicle market.
Thomas Ingenlath, former Senior Vice President of Design at Volvo, is now the CEO of Polestar. He has been instrumental in shaping the design language of Volvo, and his leadership brings a fresh vision to the brand. Jonathan Goodman, previously Senior Vice President of Corporate Communications at Volvo, has taken on the role of COO at Polestar.
Dr. Shen Feng, President of Volvo Car China R&D, has been appointed as the Global Chief Technology Officer of Polestar. With extensive experience in automotive R&D, he plays a crucial role in driving innovation and development for the brand. His leadership ensures that Polestar remains competitive in the Chinese market and beyond.
In July this year, reports suggested that Polestar would debut its first two-door coupe at the Frankfurt Motor Show, but the event didn’t materialize. However, on October 17, the world will finally see the true face of this new model. Designed by Thomas Ingenlath, the car is expected to deliver exceptional performance and style.
The new Polestar model will be powered by Volvo’s T8 E-drive hybrid system, combining a 2.0L four-cylinder supercharged and turbocharged engine with an electric motor. While the base system delivers impressive power, the Polestar version is expected to be more refined and powerful. The gasoline engine could produce up to 324 horsepower, while the motor adds 81 horsepower, resulting in a combined output of around 600 horsepower. This makes the car a serious competitor to brands like Mercedes-AMG, BMW M, and Audi Sport.
