According to Reuters, scientists have developed a groundbreaking method to grow wheat at twice the normal speed, which could play a crucial role in supporting the world's rapidly growing population. This innovation has the potential to revolutionize agriculture and help meet future food demands more efficiently.
Dr. Brande Wulff, the lead researcher from the John Innes Centre in Norwich, England, explained that traditional wheat cultivation typically takes four to five months from seed to harvest. However, his team managed to achieve this in just eight weeks using specially designed LED lighting systems. The plants are exposed to light for 22 hours a day and receive a nutrient-rich solution, creating optimal conditions for rapid growth. Despite these efforts, the researchers are also exploring more energy-efficient methods to make their approach sustainable for broader use.
Dr. Wulff emphasized the urgent need to develop crops that can better adapt to changing climate conditions. He stated, “We are racing against time to produce crops that are not only more productive but also more nutritious and affordable. These improvements will be essential in feeding our growing global population.â€
The new crops produced through this method are not only faster-growing but also larger and healthier compared to those grown under conventional conditions. The research team uses LED lights that emit blue and red wavelengths—essential for photosynthesis. Unlike most labs and greenhouses that rely on sodium-vapor lamps, which emit unnecessary yellow and green light, LEDs provide only what the plants need, making the process more efficient.
Despite the benefits, Dr. Wulff acknowledged that applying this technique to large-scale farming is currently impractical due to the high energy demand of continuous nighttime illumination. However, he believes the technology will significantly accelerate crop research, leading to the development of more resilient, nutritious, and chemically efficient crops in the future.
In addition to wheat, the research team is working on growing six generations of barley, peas, and chickpeas within a single year. This advancement could greatly speed up breeding programs and improve crop varieties much faster than traditional methods allow.
