Design and Implementation of UCPS Protocol and HDMI Authentication System

China's first digital interface content protection industry standard with independent intellectual property rights - "Technical Specifications for Digital Interface Content Protection System" (UCPS standard) has been promulgated by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and officially implemented on March 1, 2010. The UCPS standard is the first content protection standard for independent intellectual property rights in China's consumer electronics industry, and the first independent technology standard led by enterprises. This article introduces the world's first UCPS-compliant, HDMI1.3-compliant transmitter SHC3201, and discusses the design and implementation of the UCPS protocol and HDMI verification system.

How UCPS works

The Identification Management Unit (IMU) is an independent software or hardware module that performs internal authentication, two-way authentication between IMUs, information collection, and system integrity maintenance. The IMU and HDMI hardware interfaces are connected via an I2C channel. The transmitting end IMU and the receiving end IMU perform data interaction through the DDC channel of the HDMI interface. The IMU module is developed by the UCPS organization and then provided to the interface chip manufacturer.

As shown in Figure 1, after the system is powered on, the IMU first authenticates with the device interface, then the authentication between the device interfaces, and finally the authentication between the IMUs. After the above three types of authentication are passed, the sender starts to encrypt and send the protected content, and the receiving end starts to receive and decrypt the restored protected content.

2 is a schematic diagram of specific communication of UCPS in an HDMI system. The communication authentication between the IMU and the device is through the I2C interface. The communication authentication between the devices is completed through the DDC bus on the HDMI interface. The communication authentication of the two IMUs needs to be completed through the two interfaces of I2C and DDC.
