Touch controller IC market will grow nearly twice as fast in the next five years

Driven by the popularity of Apple's iPhone and iPad, touch screens in smartphones and media tablets have grown dramatically, resulting in touch controller IC (IC) shipments that will nearly triple in volume in just five years.

According to IHS iSuppli’s report on display electronics, touch controller IC shipments will reach 2.4 billion in 2015, compared with 864.6 million in 2010. This year, shipments will increase by 30% to reach 1.7 billion. The next two years will maintain a high double-digit speed. The growth rate in 2015 will fall slightly.

The strong expansion of touch controller IC shipments stems from the growing number of products using touch technology. Apple launched the iPhone with multi-projected capacitive touch screens in 2007, and it almost opened its touch screen market with its own efforts. Since the introduction of the iPhone, many other smart phone manufacturers have adopted sophisticated touch sensors.

In addition, touch technology is no longer mainly used in mobile phones and has entered a variety of consumer electronics products, thereby expanding the overall space for touch applications. Touch sensors are currently found in tablet PCs, e-books, all-in-one computers, portable media players, portable navigation devices, flat panel TVs and monitors, handheld game consoles, automotive applications, digital cameras, and digital photo frames. It is expected that the total number of products using touch controller ICs will reach 1.06 billion this year, almost double the 514.9 million two years ago.

Since each product often uses more than one IC, especially a tablet computer, and the manufacturing yield of advanced touch screen modules is relatively low, the shipment of touch controller ICs is higher than that of mobile products using touch screens.

Projected capacitive touch screens, such as Apple's first touch screen in its products, accounted for 54% of the touch screen market in 2011. In the next few years, projected capacitive touch screens will still maintain their dominant position, leading the way in other touch sensor technologies such as infrared, optical, resistive and surface acoustic waves.

Major Touch IC Manufacturers: Slower Revenue Growth than Shipments Leading touch controller IC suppliers last year were Atmel, Cypress Semiconductor, and Synaptics, which together accounted for over 60% of total market operating revenue. . In spite of this, there is still competition in this fast-growing area. The competition is mainly from Asian display driver IC suppliers such as Taiwan Union Technology and Wonder Photo, and Solomon Systech International Ltd in Hong Kong. . Many Asian suppliers are developing their own touch IC solutions and hope to eventually integrate touch functionality into existing single-chip driver ICs. These single-chip driver ICs are mainly used for mobile phones, and LCD screens smaller than 5 inches in size in the general mobile consumer electronics market.

However, IHS iSuppli Corp. pointed out that although shipments of discrete touch controller ICs will continue to grow this year and in the coming years, it is expected that operating revenue growth will be relatively limited. Touch controller IC revenue this year is estimated to reach 1.5 billion US dollars, an increase of 15% from 2011's 1.3 billion US dollars, the growth rate is much lower than the shipment. And in contrast to the continued growth in shipments in the coming years, Touch IC revenue will peak at US$1.6 billion in 2014 and then begin to decline.

The outlook for operating revenue growth is not strong due to a number of factors, including: a decrease in the average sales price; a decrease in the number of touch ICs used in each panel in medium-sized applications; and an increase in market pressure due to integrated solutions provided by IC manufacturers in Asia . The average selling price is expected to drop by about 12% per year before 2015. At the same time, in many cases, the number of touch controller ICs used by tablet computers over 7 inches will be reduced from three or more to one.

The integration of touch functions into the display driver ICs mounted on the chip-on-glass will also pose challenges to the touch MCU suppliers in the near future, although this design approach will have less impact on operating revenue than other factors in 2012-2015. .

Mobile products, especially smartphones and media tablets, will continue to lead the news of touch solutions and touch-related ICs. Both applications will account for 61% of the touch controller market in 2011 and will exceed 71% by 2015.
