Shenzhen Shenmu Company Announces the Fastest Commercialization of Dynamic Face Recognition Technology in the World

In 2017, "face recognition" technology truly took the spotlight. Overnight, it became a buzzword in the tech industry, with Baidu's search index rising from 1058 at the start of the year to an impressive 2910. This surge was not just due to the market hype around PhoneX but also because the technology had reached a stage of maturity, enabling broader applications across industries. As a result, numerous companies specializing in this field emerged during the year. Last week, Shenzhen Shenmu, a leading artificial intelligence and big data company focused on face recognition, object recognition, and vehicle identification, announced that it had successfully raised tens of millions of dollars in its Series A funding round, led by China Venture Capital. According to a spokesperson, the funds will be primarily used for in-depth project development, market expansion, and brand building. The transaction was advised exclusively by God’s joint venture. What makes Shenmu so appealing to top-tier venture capital firms? The company is driven by a strong technical team, both domestically and internationally, with a focus on computer vision algorithms. Its founder, Liu Jingfeng, is a renowned entrepreneur who returned from Silicon Valley. He holds a Ph.D. in Electronics and Computer Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University and is a member of the prestigious SigmaXi scientific honor society. In 2014, he was selected as part of China’s “Thousand Talents Plan,” a national initiative to attract top scientific talent. Liu founded Shenmu after returning to China in 2010, initially establishing Lianxue Puri Electronic Technology in Wuhan. There, his team developed a smart grid power carrier communication main control chip, which was quickly commercialized. During this process, they gradually expanded into face and object recognition technologies, discovering new opportunities in the field. By 2016, Liu had assembled a team of AI experts from top universities in the U.S. and China, including Carnegie Mellon, Michigan State, University of Oklahoma, Tsinghua, and Zhejiang. Together, they formed DeepCam, a smart big data company focused on computer vision. They also established a biometric research lab in collaboration with Carnegie Mellon and became founding members of the NSF’s BigLearningCenter. According to HeLi Investment, a UBS-affiliated venture capital firm, Liu’s deep academic background, combined with his global industry insight, made him a standout leader. This recognition led to their joint investment in Shenmu. Shenmu has consistently focused on advancing computer vision algorithms, achieving industry-leading performance in areas such as face feature extraction, posture recognition, object recognition, image classification, and OCR. It has pioneered cutting-edge technologies like facial restoration, blurred face recovery, and large-gesture face recognition. The company has built a 1.5 million 3D depth camera face database, with model training efficiency 400 times faster than similar products and superior generalization capabilities. This focus on algorithmic innovation has propelled Shenmu’s rapid growth, with successful technical solutions deployed across various industries and widespread investor confidence. Shenmu Smart City Solutions Face recognition is now widely used, particularly in public safety. Shenmu’s Smart City project aims to develop world-leading technologies such as low-resolution face recognition, large-scene face detection, and 2D-to-3D face modeling. Their gaze algorithm-enabled cameras can recognize faces in various postures, even when the head is turned up to 60 degrees or tilted sideways by 30 degrees. The system can also identify faces with as little as 20% exposure and restore facial features through eye details for accurate matching. To meet the needs of video data structuring and business intelligence in public security, Shenmu developed a dynamic face recognition system based on deep learning, offering features like character tracking, trajectory playback, and face feature collision. These solutions are compatible with existing cameras in city surveillance systems, improving linkage and processing efficiency while reducing policing costs. Currently, Shenmu’s products are being used in public safety systems across multiple regions in China. Expanding into New Retail Shenmu has applied its AI technologies, including face recognition, object recognition, and vehicle identification, in sectors like smart cities, tourism, healthcare, and mobile terminals. Their deep learning models for phone depth cameras have led to the development of face unlock (with live body detection) and intelligent album sorting solutions, with over 600,000 units shipped for second and third-tier brands. In the U.S., Shenmu has won orders for 15,000 convenience stores, supermarkets, and bank online stores, providing internal security and passenger flow analysis. It has built a database of over 190,000 "common theft" records, allowing real-time alerts for suspicious individuals and helping save $3–$5k per store annually. In domestic retail, Shenmu has implemented traffic flow analytics, gender and age statistics, and VIP identification using two cameras at a mall entrance, offering valuable insights for planning and evaluation. Looking ahead, Shenmu plans to focus on integrating face recognition with the unmanned store concept. When a customer enters, the system identifies them, analyzes their behavior, automatically detects items in their basket, and allows them to exit by scanning their face for payment. As face recognition continues to expand, Shenmu remains committed to pushing the boundaries of algorithmic research and big data accumulation. With new funding, the company aims to bring together more global technical teams to drive innovation and deliver efficient, practical solutions for diverse industries.
