ON Semiconductor has introduced a new generation of class AB audio amplifier NCP2991 that delivers superior audio performance for portable and wireless applications without sacrificing energy efficiency.

Manor Narayanan, vice president and general manager of ON Semiconductor's Digital and Consumer Products Division, said: "Mobile or portable media devices with clear, noise-free audio output are critical to user satisfaction. However, hardware designers often encounter unexpected expectations. Noise issues from audio systems outside. ON Semiconductor's new Class AB amplifiers ensure noise-free audio amplification and protection against external noise sources, ensuring high-quality audio performance. We increase the robustness of the amplifier and expect to minimize the designer Work and try to shorten the design cycle."

The NCP2991 meets two of the most critical requirements in today's portable and wireless audio applications, including customer demand for noise-free audio amplification and fast response times.

Noise-free audio amplification
The NCP2991 offers an excellent power supply rejection ratio (PSSR) of -103 dB(dB), eliminating any noise that can be generated by battery supply voltage fluctuations. This device is highly resistant to the so-called "Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA) Noise" generated during Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) signal transmission. In addition, the device ensures zero "pop" and "click" sounds on start and stop for all input configurations. The device's extremely low (0.015%) typical total harmonic distortion (THD) further ensures high fidelity audio output.

Super fast start time
The start-up time of the NCP2991 can be selected between 15 milliseconds (ms) and 20 ms. Due to the extremely fast startup time, the NCP2991 is able to remain in the off mode when not in use. Therefore, most of the time, the NCP2991 consumes only 20 nanoamperes (nA) of current. For portable devices with touch screens, fast audio response is especially important because end users consider audio feedback to be an indicator of overall system responsiveness.

Other characteristics
The NCP2991 is capable of delivering 1.35 watts (W) of output power to an 8 ohm (Ω) speaker or 1.1 W of output power to a 4 Ω speaker. It also has a built-in thermal overload protection circuit that shuts down the device in the event of an over temperature condition.

Wes Reid, Director of Strategic Marketing and Systems Engineering, Digital and Consumer Products, ON Semiconductor, said: "The NCP2991 is an important new addition to our lineup of solutions for the four major subsystems common in most portable applications. This device is designed to meet the needs of the audio subsystem. In addition to the audio subsystem, ON Semiconductor offers solutions for the three subsystems of lighting/display, power management and interconnection in handheld and portable devices."

Package and price
The NCP2991 is available in an industry-standard 1.45 mm x 1.45 mm x 0.6 mm μBump package and is priced at $0.22 per unit in 3,000-piece quantities.
