LED originator: Be wary of LED lighting behind closed doors

LEDs and OLEDs will open up the future of lighting. The lighting seminar with this theme was held on March 4, 2009 at LightingFair 2009 held at the Tokyo International Convention and Exhibition Center. As the blue LED inventor, Nakamura Shuji, who is currently active in the first line of research on GaN light-emitting components, and OLED inventor City Toto, attended the discussion.

LED and OLED will open up the future of lighting

The lighting seminar with this theme was held on March 4, 2009 at LightingFair 2009 held at the Tokyo International Convention and Exhibition Center. The inventor of the blue LED, Nakamura Shuji (Professor of the University of California, Santa Barbara, USA), and the OLED inventor, Masahiro Ichiro (Professor of the Graduate School of Science and Engineering, Yamagata University) attended the discussion. The international conference hall of Tokyo’s Ariake International Convention and Exhibition Center was crowded with audiences, and the venue was almost full. Under the auspices of lighting designer Ochiai (M&O Design Board Chairman), participants discussed the feasibility and popularity of LED lighting and OLED lighting.

Worried about the phenomenon of closed doors in the new lighting field

The lighting exhibition is held every two years. The biggest feature of this year is that LED lighting has become the biggest highlight. First of all, the spokesperson Nakamura and the urban households respectively described their impressions of the exhibition venue.

Nakamura said: It can be said that more than 90% of the exhibits are LED lighting fixtures. This is quite different from the previous lighting show, which is amazing. Nakamura participated in the lighting exhibition held in the United States two or three years ago. At that time, only about 20 to 30% of the exhibits were LED-related products, and the main characters were existing light sources such as fluorescent lamps. Nakamura believes that from the perspective of the research and development of white LEDs, the luminous efficiency of LED lighting will increase by at least 50% compared with the current two to three years. There will be more and more research on LED lighting. As a researcher of LED, I am very happy. In a personal speech before the group discussion, Nakamura mentioned that the luminous efficiency is likely to reach 200 to 250 lm/W in the next two to three years.

The impression of the city is: 4 years ago, most of the venue fluorescent lights, LED lighting two years ago, this year has turned into an LED show. The rapid development of LED lighting technology makes people feel that non-OLED lighting can be expected. In a personal speech before the group discussion, the city pointed out that although OLED lighting has made solid progress in terms of luminous efficiency and longevity, it has been developed two to three years later than white LED.

While talking about the rapid advancement of LED lighting technology, the city also pointed out concerns about the business model. In the Japanese market for LED lighting, there has been a phenomenon of closed doors. Indeed, white LED technology originated in Japan, but Japanese lighting manufacturers are unable to attack overseas markets (urban households). Since it is limited to Japan, the development of the Japanese market is different from that of the global market. As a result, the ability to compete in the global market has been lost, or the specifications of the products have to be changed in order to attack the global market. This situation is worrying. The closed-door phenomenon that once appeared on Japanese mobile phones is likely to repeat itself in LED lighting.

Nakamura pointed out that the development of LED lighting in the United States benefits from risky companies. Whether it is research and development or business decisions are very rapid. The same is true of Taiwan and mainland China. However, since the development of LED lighting in Japan is handled by large manufacturers and the decision-making speed is slow (Nakamura), other countries will catch up with Japanese manufacturers sooner or later. In addition, Nakamura also believes that Japan has too many regulations, which hinders the development of LED lighting. Without abolition of the regulations, there will be no free competition (Nakamura).

Avoid derailing the global market

The host pointed out that the problem of the Japanese LED lighting business is not only the phenomenon of closed doors. In addition to LED lighting, Luohe also has experience in OLED lighting, and there are many opportunities to understand overseas LED lighting. According to these experiences, it can be said that Japan has reached the world's most advanced level in terms of hardware such as LEDs and OLED components and appliances, but Japan is lacking in the development of applications that allow more people to enjoy lighting pleasure. Enthusiasm.

In this regard, Nakamura said: This is because white LEDs are developed by traditional Japanese manufacturers, while traditional Japanese lighting manufacturers only want to achieve productization. If LED lighting is used, a colorful lighting design can be achieved, and the color and brightness can be easily controlled by software using a computer. As a result, lighting will undergo tremendous changes, and LED lighting will become a new product different from the existing lighting culture. Therefore, in addition to hardware, LED lighting software (Note: here refers to the use of skills) is also indispensable, otherwise in the field of LED lighting, Japan will derail the global market (Nakamura).

In addition, the city pointed out that in order not to derail the global market, the standardization of hardware and software is crucial. Many people believe that the standardization of LED lighting that is now on the market has come to an end. However, the practical application of OLED lighting has just begun, and it is hoped that the standardization of OLED lighting can also be born in Japan and will continue to develop.
