Interview with DTS Zhang Xiaoming: Open up different scenarios to create the best sound ecosystem

In the era of home internet, DTS plays a crucial role in delivering an immersive HD video and audio experience, significantly enhancing user satisfaction. Many top-tier brand products integrate DTS technology, elevating the audio quality to new heights. During the GFIC2017 Global Home Internet Conference, the reporter had an exclusive interview with Dr. Zhang Xiaoming, Vice President of China at Xperi Corporation (a company that owns DTS, dedicated to providing high-definition audio solutions). ![Photo: Dr. Zhang Xiaoming, Vice President of China, Xperi Corporation] DTS has been actively expanding across multiple platforms, leveraging its advanced technology to attract a wide range of partners. Since its establishment in 1993, DTS has focused on creating a high-quality cinema-like sound experience. The technology is now embedded in various devices, including mobile phones, PCs, and home TVs, all using DTS decoding to deliver realistic audio environments. Dr. Zhang highlighted some of DTS’s latest innovations, such as Play-Fi, which allows wireless transmission of high-quality lossless audio over Wi-Fi to different speakers in various rooms. Another key development is DTS:X, a next-generation spatial audio technology that redefines how sound is experienced. It moves beyond traditional channel-based audio, enabling a more accurate and immersive sound restoration. As of this month, over 700 theaters worldwide have adopted DTS:X, and more than 100 movies in China already support it. DTS has also partnered with seven music studios in mainland China and Hong Kong to produce DTS:X content. These include Zhongying Huairou Digital Production Base, Beijing Shenglin Sound Mixing Studio, and others. Additionally, DTS:X is now supported by mainstream audio amplifiers and receivers, allowing users to enjoy high-quality immersive sound at home. Beyond the movie industry, DTS is also making waves in the mobile sector. Huawei’s P series, Mate series, and Nova models all feature DTS sound technology. DTS introduced Headphone:X for mobile devices, which delivers a realistic 5.1 or even 7.1 surround sound experience through two small earphones. This enhances the listening experience, especially when watching movies or listening to music, making it easier to locate sound sources from different directions. In emerging technologies like AR, VR, and MR, DTS offers integrated solutions that blend virtual and real-world experiences. Major TV brands such as TCL, Hisense, Skyworth, Konka, Changhong, Xiaomi, Meizu, and Storm, as well as international giants like Sony and Samsung, have incorporated DTS technology into their products. Globally, DTS is used in around 2.5 billion devices, maintaining a strong market presence. With 40 to 50 million smart TVs entering the Chinese market annually, one out of every three uses DTS technology. Dr. Zhang emphasized that the future of the home entertainment market is very promising, especially in first- and second-tier cities where people are seeking more spiritual and emotional satisfaction. As 4K and 8K content becomes more widespread, the demand for high-quality audio will grow, and DTS:X is perfectly positioned to meet this need. Looking ahead, DTS plans to announce several joint initiatives at CES 2018, aiming to deepen collaborations with domestic partners. This move is expected to bring even better audio experiences to Chinese consumers. We can’t wait to see what’s coming next.
