Semtech has launched a new "power-on-the-go" radio frequency (RF) platform, offering an easy-to-use, low-power, and cost-effective integrated RF solution that can replace traditional infrared (IR) and RF discrete designs. This platform is ideal for one-way remote keyless entry (RKE), remote control products, and active RFID applications in consumer electronics, home and building automation, as well as asset tracking systems, surveillance solutions, and community alert systems.
The new SX1240 and SX1242 are ISM band RF transmitters that provide a fully integrated solution with minimal external components—just an external crystal and a matching antenna. These devices feature a “power-on-the-go†mode, pre-configured for 434 MHz and 868 MHz (SX1240) or 345 MHz (SX1242), eliminating the need for a microcontroller (MCU). This simplifies design, reduces system size, and lowers costs. They also support various low-cost antenna technologies, making them even easier to integrate into existing systems.
When paired with Semtech’s low-power SX1239 RF receiver, the SX1240 and SX1242 form a complete RF solution. All three devices are highly efficient and consume very little power in sleep mode, extending battery life and making them perfect for small button cell batteries and energy-harvesting sensors.
Marc Pegulu, director of marketing for Semtech’s Industrial Simulation product line, stated, “This new RF platform gives designers a simple and cost-effective solution for emerging one-way remote control, RKE, and active RFID applications. With high integration and ‘power-on-the-go’ capabilities, these devices deliver the performance of an integrated RF solution at the price of a discrete one.â€
The SX1240 operates in the 418, 434, and 868 MHz license-free ISM bands and supports FSK and OOK modulation up to 100 kb/s. It offers two operational modes: “Power-On-The-Go,†which eliminates the need for an MCU, and “Advanced†mode, allowing full customization via an MCU through a two-wire interface.
With output power options of +10 dBm (16.5 mA typical) or 0 dBm (9 mA typical), and a sleep current of just 500 nA, the SX1240 is ideal for low-power applications like button cells. When used with the SX1239, it achieves a link budget of 130 dBm, enabling the use of small antennas and reducing overall system size.
The SX1242 is similar but operates at 345 MHz using OOK modulation up to 10 kb/s. It also features the “power-on-the-go†mode and low power consumption, with a sleep current of 500 nA and a current rating of 22 mA at +12 dBm output. Paired with the SX1239, it provides a link budget of 132 dBm.
The SX1239 is a versatile RF receiver that supports multiple frequencies, including 345, 418, 434, 868, and 915 MHz, and uses various modulation formats such as FSK, GFSK, MSK, GMSK, and OOK. It maintains consistent performance from 1.8V to 3.6V and includes internal VCO, PLL, and RF switch components, reducing the need for external filters and lowering overall costs.
Designed for ease of migration, the SX1239 is compatible with Semtech’s SX1231 and SX1233 transceivers, making it suitable for two-way RKE and remote control applications.
All three devices are certified for global regulatory standards and come in compact packages: the SX1240 and SX1242 in 8-pin SOIC, and the SX1239 in a 24-pin QFN.
Applications include:
- **Car**: Keychain, garage door opener
- **Home and Building Automation**: Wireless alarms, lighting control, access control
- **Remote Keyless Entry**: Keychain, garage door opener
- **Set-top Box**: RF remote control
