Semtech has launched a new "power-on-the-go" radio frequency (RF) platform, offering an easy-to-use, low-power, and cost-effective integrated RF solution designed to replace traditional IR (infrared) and RF discrete designs in one-way remote keyless entry (RKE) and remote control systems. This versatile platform is ideal for consumer electronics, home and building automation, and active RFID applications such as shipping and asset tracking, patented surveillance systems, and community alert systems.
The new SX1240 and SX1242 are ISM band RF transmitters that provide a fully integrated solution requiring only an external crystal and a matching antenna for true data in/out functionality. These devices feature a "power-on-the-go" mode, pre-configured for 434 MHz and 868 MHz (SX1240) or 345 MHz (SX1242), eliminating the need for a microcontroller (MCU) and simplifying design while reducing system size and cost. They also support various low-cost antenna technologies, removing the need for antenna tuning, which further streamlines the design process.
When paired with Semtech's low-power SX1239 RF receiver, the SX1240 and SX1242 form a complete RF solution. All three devices boast high efficiency and extremely low sleep mode power consumption, making them perfect for small button cells and energy harvesting sensors.

The SX1240 operates in the 418, 434, and 868 MHz license-free ISM bands, supporting FSK and OOK modulation up to 100 kb/s. It offers two application modes: "Power-On-The-Go" mode, which eliminates the need for an MCU and allows simple configuration via control pins, and "Advanced" mode, which enables programming through a two-wire interface for custom designs.
With output power options of +10 dBm (16.5 mA typical) or 0 dBm (9 mA typical), and a sleep current of 500 nA, the SX1240 is ideal for battery-powered applications limited to 20 mA. When used with the SX1239 receiver, it achieves a high link budget of 130 dBm, enabling the use of very small antennas and reducing overall design size.
The SX1242 shares similar features with the SX1240 but operates in the 345 MHz ISM band using OOK modulation up to 10 kb/s. It also supports "Power-On-The-Go" mode and offers a current rating of 22 mA at +12 dBm output power with 500 nA in sleep mode, making it highly efficient for low-power applications.
The SX1239 receiver works seamlessly with both the SX1240 and SX1242. It covers a wide frequency range including 345, 418, 434, 868, and 915 MHz ISM bands, and supports multiple modulation formats like FSK, GFSK, MSK, GMSK, and OOK. The SX1239 delivers consistent RF performance from 1.8V to 3.6V and integrates advanced features such as a VCO oscillator, PLL loop filter, and RF switch, reducing the need for external components and lowering costs.
Designed for ease of migration, the SX1239 is compatible with Semtech’s SX1231 and SX1233 transceivers, making it suitable for two-way RKE and remote control applications.
All three devices are certified to global regulatory standards. The SX1240 and SX1242 come in an 8-pin SOIC package, while the SX1239 is available in a 24-pin QFN package.
