It is estimated that the scale of China's Internet of Things market will rise to 1.76 trillion yuan in 2020

In 2017, the Chinese mobile Internet of Things (IoT) market reached a significant milestone, with an estimated value of 1 trillion yuan. According to industry reports, this figure is expected to grow substantially, reaching 1.76 trillion yuan by 2020. The years between 2018 and 2020 are considered a crucial period for the development of IoT in China, as the sector moves toward greater maturity and widespread adoption. A report released by the Fudan University School of Management research group on December 21st highlighted that the growth of the mobile IoT sector is driven by strong demand and technological advancements. The market is projected to maintain a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of around 15%, which suggests continued expansion over the next few years. This growth is fueled by innovations in location-aware networks, mobile communication systems, and location-based computing, all of which form the backbone of the mobile IoT infrastructure. One key driver of this growth is GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) technology, which has seen rapid development and is now a major force in the mobile IoT market. By 2025, it's anticipated that over 8 billion mobile IoT devices will be supported by global GNSS technology, indicating its critical role in enabling smart connectivity across various industries. In the Chinese market, the mobile IoT industry saw substantial progress in 2017, with the market size hitting around 1 trillion yuan. This number is expected to rise to 1.76 trillion yuan by 2020, signaling a shift toward more sophisticated and integrated IoT applications. During this time, China Mobile’s networking industry is expected to enter a phase of rapid development and refinement. Globally, the Asia-Pacific region accounts for nearly half of all mobile IoT access devices, yet its share of industry profits remains relatively low at just 22%. While the region leads in hardware infrastructure, there is still room for improvement in terms of market coverage and profitability. Chen Jinpei, CEO of Chihiro Location and a member of the research group, emphasized that the report aligns well with current industry trends. He noted that precise location services are gaining increasing recognition, and his company is working to make accurate space-time positioning as accessible and essential as the internet itself—available on demand and with minimal barriers. Looking ahead, the report predicts that by 2020, China’s mobile IoT industry will reach a level of maturity comparable to global standards. This will open up new opportunities across multiple sectors, including industrial IoT, smart cities, and smart energy. Additionally, consumer-focused applications such as vehicle networking, wearable devices, and smart homes are expected to see widespread adoption. According to statistics, smart city projects account for about 20% of total mobile IoT demand. With this level of interest, global investment in smart cities is expected to exceed $120 billion by 2020. Meanwhile, the automotive IoT market is also set to grow rapidly, with China’s market forecasted to reach $33.8 billion in 2020 and potentially surge to $216.2 billion by 2025.
