It is estimated that the scale of China's Internet of Things market will rise to 1.76 trillion yuan in 2020

According to the 2017 Mobile Internet of Things (IoT) Industry Report, China's mobile IoT market is expected to reach 1 trillion yuan in 2017 and grow significantly to 1.76 trillion yuan by 2020. This period from 2018 to 2020 is considered a crucial phase for the development of the IoT industry in China. The report, released by the Fudan University School of Management Research Group, highlights that the market will maintain an average annual compound growth rate of 15%, with the mobile IoT sector becoming a key driver of economic growth. It also emphasizes that location-aware networks, mobile communication networks, and location-based computing networks will form the backbone of the mobile IoT infrastructure, shaping its future direction. GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) technology has seen rapid adoption in the mobile IoT space, becoming a dominant force. By 2025, it is estimated that over 8 billion mobile IoT devices will be supported by global GNSS technology, signaling a major shift in how connected devices operate. In 2017, the Chinese mobile IoT market reached approximately 1 trillion yuan, and this number is projected to climb to 1.76 trillion yuan by 2020. During this time, China’s mobile IoT networking industry is expected to enter a critical phase of maturity and widespread adoption. Globally, the Asia-Pacific region accounts for 46% of all mobile IoT access devices, yet only contributes 22% to the total industry profit. While hardware infrastructure leads globally, market coverage and profitability still lag behind. Chen Jinpei, CEO of Chihiro Location and a member of the research group, stated that the report aligns closely with industry trends. He emphasized that more people are recognizing the value of precise location services and that efforts are being made to turn accurate positioning into a public service, similar to the internet—accessible, on-demand, and low-cost. Looking ahead, the report predicts that by 2020, China’s mobile IoT industry will mature and align with global standards. Applications across industrial IoT, smart cities, and smart energy will see significant growth. Consumer applications such as vehicle-to-everything (V2X), wearable devices, and smart homes are also expected to gain traction. Smart city projects account for 20% of total mobile IoT demand, with global investments reaching $120 billion by 2020. The automotive IoT sector is also set for rapid expansion, with China’s market expected to grow from $33.8 billion in 2020 to $216.2 billion by 2025. This reflects a growing trend toward smarter, more connected living and working environments.
