Molex, a global leader in complete interconnect solutions, has introduced two new push-pull 6-channel micro-SIM card sockets designed for compact communication devices such as ultra-thin smartphones, tablets, GSM/UMTS modems, and PC cards. These sockets are part of the 8-way micro-SIM series, with the 78727 series featuring a height of 1.40 mm and an integrated detection switch, while the 78646 series offers a slightly taller design at 1.45 mm without a detection switch.
One of the standout features of Molex's micro-SIM card sockets is their built-in short-circuit protection. The 78646 series uses a housing design that restricts lateral movement of the SIM card after insertion, reducing the risk of electrical shorts. Meanwhile, the 78727 series incorporates a raised plastic wall to isolate the SIM card from the metal housing, enhancing safety and performance.
The 78727 series also includes a card position deflection mechanism that prevents incorrect insertion of the micro-SIM card. This feature ensures the card is properly aligned before being fully seated. In addition, the detection switch in this series confirms when the card is fully inserted. The 78646 series, on the Other hand, has a chamfered edge marking that guides users during insertion, minimizing errors.
Jason Foo, a senior product marketing engineer at Molex’s Commercial Products division, commented: “As consumer demand continues to drive smaller and more advanced communication devices, the micro-SIM specification plays a crucial role in this evolution. The new micro-SIM series provides an optimized, value-added socket solution with advanced features like short-circuit protection, detection switches, and card position bias—ensuring reliable and correct SIM card insertion.â€
Both socket series feature round terminals that deliver excellent electrical contact performance. The step-by-step reverse terminal design allows for smooth card insertion and ejection. Each socket includes 14 solder joints for a secure PCB crimp connection, ensuring long-term reliability.
Additionally, both the 78646 and 78727 sockets are equipped with an LCP (Liquid Crystal Polymer) enclosure, which offers high-temperature resistance and a wide "finger" area for efficient push-pull operation. These sockets are also compliant with RoHS and ELV environmental regulations, making them suitable for use in modern, eco-friendly electronic designs.
