In recent reports, Japan Display (JDI) has announced its strategic move into the automotive panel market, aiming to revitalize its business by focusing on car-related displays. The demand for automotive dashboards and central information panels has surged, especially for large central display units that now range from 7-8 inches up to over 10 inches. Many popular vehicle models now come equipped with touch-enabled panels, and this trend is expected to continue growing.
Moreover, panel manufacturers are ramping up production of head-up displays (HUDs) for cars, which are becoming increasingly common in modern vehicles. JDI is also investing heavily in OLED technology, planning to ship sample units in 2019 and begin mass production by 2021. The company believes that OLEDs will become a major trend in the automotive sector due to their design flexibility and superior visual performance.
JDI, a leading player in the small and medium-sized panel market in Japan, currently derives more than half of its revenue from Apple. In addition, it is the world’s largest supplier of automotive panels, making it a key player in this emerging field. The automotive panel market is highly specialized, with strict requirements for temperature, humidity resistance, and durability. As a result, the number of qualified suppliers is limited, and the price of these panels is significantly higher than standard ones, offering better profit margins.
In the automotive panel segment, companies like AUO and LGD mainly supply center console panels, typically around 7 to 8 inches in size. By 2017, the loading rate of such panels in the front market exceeded 60%. However, Chinese manufacturers like BOE and Tianma are now entering the market, intensifying competition. Despite challenges, the car panel market is expected to see significant growth between 2018 and 2021, following a period of low demand.
In August, JDI began mass-producing automotive panels using low-temperature polysilicon (LTPS) technology, which offers high-definition visuals, better design options, and energy efficiency—key features for electric vehicles. Unlike mobile device panels, which experience frequent price fluctuations, automotive panels follow a long-term supply model once specifications are set, providing more stable demand and pricing.
Looking ahead, JDI plans to leverage both LTPS and OLED technologies to capture market opportunities. While OLEDs offer design advantages, LTPS panels can integrate embedded touch features, giving JDI a competitive edge. With its focus on innovation and expansion, JDI is well-positioned to lead in the evolving automotive panel industry.
