On June 21, Linear Technology Corporation launched the LT3015, a high-performance 1.5A negative low dropout (LDO) linear regulator designed for applications requiring fast transient response, low noise, and accurate current limiting. This device supports a wide input voltage range of -1.8V to -30V and offers an adjustable output voltage from -1.220V to -29.5V. Its common emitter NPN power transistor design simplifies operation with just a single supply, achieving a typical dropout voltage of only 310mV under full load.
The LT3015 delivers exceptional performance with an output voltage noise of just 60μVRMS across a 10Hz to 100kHz bandwidth. It consumes only 1.1mA in active mode and less than 1μA when shut down, making it highly efficient. The quiescent current remains stable even under varying voltage conditions. This regulator is a perfect complement to Linear’s popular positive LDOs, such as the 1.5A LT1963A, and is ideal for use in negative logic power supplies, low-noise measurement systems, industrial power solutions, and post-regulated switching power supplies.
One of the standout features of the LT3015 is its reference amplifier topology, which ensures precise DC performance and excellent loop stability. It works reliably with a wide range of output capacitors, including small and cost-effective ceramic types, without the need for additional series resistance (ESR). The device is stable with as little as 10μF of output capacitance, making it easy to integrate into compact designs.
The LT3015 also includes a bidirectional shutdown feature that allows it to operate at both positive and negative logic levels. Additionally, its high shutdown threshold accuracy enables the SHDN pin to be used for setting programmable undervoltage lockout (UVLO) thresholds on the input supply. Internal protection mechanisms include reverse output protection, a precise current limit with foldback to keep the power transistor within its safe operating area, and hysteresis-based thermal limits for enhanced reliability.
The LT3015 is available in multiple package options, including a 3mm x 3mm 8-pin DFN (0.75mm height) with a back thermal pad, a 12-pin MSOP with a back thermal pad, a through-hole TO-220, and a surface-mount DD-Pak. It is suitable for a wide temperature range, with Class E and Class I versions operating between -40°C and +125°C, while MP grade parts are rated for -55°C to +125°C.
