On November 13, *International Shipping Network News* reported that a consortium of five British universities is set to collaborate with 31 industry partners in a £36 million investment aimed at advancing robotic solutions for marine energy and critical asset inspection, maintenance, and certification. The initiative will focus on developing intelligent technologies to support offshore operations in challenging and unpredictable environments.
The Edinburgh Robotics Technology Centre, led by Heriot-Watt University and the University of Edinburgh, will spearhead this alliance. Other key participants include Imperial College London, the University of Oxford, and the University of Liverpool. Together, they will form the "ORCAHub" (Offshore Robots for Certification of Assets) initiative, which aims to push the boundaries of robotics and artificial intelligence in maritime applications.
David Lane, the head of ORCAHub, highlighted that the global marine energy sector is grappling with numerous challenges, including an aging workforce and the need for safer, more efficient operational methods. He emphasized that the research conducted under ORCAHub will not only address these issues but also drive transformative changes in how offshore inspections and maintenance are carried out.
By integrating advanced robotics and AI, the project seeks to enhance safety, reduce human exposure to hazardous conditions, and improve the sustainability of marine energy projects. This collaboration represents a major step forward in leveraging technology to meet the growing demands of the offshore industry, while also supporting long-term environmental and economic goals.
